English Premier League or Premiership as it was called before is the highest level of football played in England. It was once called the Barclays English Premier League because of its sponsorship from the Barclays Bank. The Premier League is the richest and most watched sport in Europe. It was founded in 1992 and currently the league comprises of 20 teams. Each team plays every other team twice in the league, once at Home and once at Away. Every year the bottom three teams are relegated to the Championship and the top three team from there are promoted to the Premier League. Last season 2018/2019 winners were Manchester City FC and runners were Liverpool FC. The top 4 teams also have the opportunity to play in the UEFA Champions League which comprises of many other top teams from other leagues in Europe. The next two teams have the chance to play the UEFA Europa League.

Premier league teams have full authority to choose and buy players from any part of the world. There are no rules that forbid paying a certain amount of buying certain number of players. The only restrictive rules are on the work permits of the players who are non European. Candidate for such visas must prove that he is a hugely talented player and would help the game in England.

From 2009 onwards a shift in the structure of football came into existence with the BIG 6 being the most richest and popular clubs in England. These were Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool , Tottenham and Manchester City. These clubs wield financial power and influence and entitle a greater share of revenue due to their great stature. The 2016–17 Deloitte Football Money League report displayed the financial disparity between the "Big Six" and the rest of the teams in the division. In their 2019 report they show that the Big SIX are in the top ten of the worlds most richest clubs.
